Dr. Ron Paul -- Get To Know Him...

BORN:
Aug. 20, 1935, Pittsburgh, Pa.

LIVES: Lake Jackson, Texas.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's of arts degree from Gettysburg College and medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine.

CAREER: Flight surgeon in U.S. Air Force. Specialist in obstetrics/gynecology. Has served in U.S. House in 1976 and 1977, 1979 to 1985 and 1997 to present. Libertarian Party nominee for president, 1988.

FAMILY: Wife, Carol; five children, 17 grandchildren.

On Iraq: “You could within 24 hours say, ‘No more Humvees have to patrol the streets.’ And that would serve as incentive for the local people to get busy, take care of their own security, and maybe they might start talking to each other. There might be some negotiations.”

On immigration: “We should have more border security. I think it should be civilian, not military. But I see that as a precise responsibility of the federal government to protect the border. Immigration should be legal. …We should remove the incentive for them to bring their families and get free care and free health services.”

On health care: “We should move … away from the benefits going to the corporations and employees of large corporations to the point where every single individual would have the same privileges of getting the tax benefits, which means the medical savings accounts and tax credits. Market control would be put on the individual.”
